Orthopedic chairs - Deckchair

First of all a deckchair is not an orthopedic chair. Its design is not based around support or ergonomics and it is cheap and quickly manufactured.

The deckchair was originally a chair found on the decks of ships and cruise liners – hence its “self descriptive” name.

The design of the deckchair is both simple and functional and it is based around the easy way in which these chairs can be folded and stacked when not in use. This makes them idea for situations where they are used on a temporary basis, i.e. for a short period of time. This is the reason why their design has been adopted and used in so many beach and sun bathing patio situations.

Deckchair Construction

The original deckchair design was very simple and the chairs were made of wood and canvas. These days many manufacturers use substitute materials with better resistance to the elements and rough treatment.

The chair works by unfolding into a basic frame across which the canvas back, bottom and leg rest canvas stretches. Once fully open the canvas base acts almost like a hammock because it is suspended between supports at the top and bottom of the frame.

Standard deckchair designs did not have armrests, however many more modern versions now incorporate armrests that unfold when the chair is opened into a sitting position.

Appearance

Many different designs are available and the most variable and colourful feature is the canvas like material that covers the structure of the deckchair. This is part of the chair that is highly visible and it was traditionally designed with multicoloured stripes running from the top to the bottom of the chair's length.
