Orthopedic chairs - Garden chair

A garden chair is just another generic name for a patio chair or a deckchair.

Garden chairs are not orthopedic and they are not generally designed with any great thought about function – unless they are foldable and intended to be packed away for storage.

These chairs can be made from wood (timber), manmade materials like plastics and moulded and extruded polymers, metal or cast iron, or a mix of one or more of the above.

Depending upon whether the garden chair will spend its life outdoors, or be stored away from the elements when not in use, designs and appearances differ considerably.

Chairs that will be permanently left outdoors need to be hardwearing and able to cope with the rigours of cold, wet and sometimes freezing weather. This means that timber, be it hard wood or soft wood, will need to be treated or painted on a regular basis.

Many of the manmade materials are very hardwearing and able to cope with prolonged damp and wetness without any detrimental affect to the chair. These chairs are very durable, but they do not look as appealing as a wooden chair.

The deckchair is now an icon of design and although snubbed by many in the 1980’s and 1990’s, it is now popular as a garden chair, and even as a featured item of patio furniture – how times change.
