Orthopedic chairs - High Seat Chairs
High seat and high backed chairs offer a greater level of support to the back than regular or low backed chairs and, importantly, they are easier to get in to or out of.
Additionally, these chairs will usually have a more vertically inclined back rest and this makes it comparatively effortless to sit down or to stand up without placing high levels of strain on the knees and lower back.
The seat level (height) of this style of chair is more elevated than a regular living room chair and this makes it easier to sit down or stand up from the chair. The reason for this is that, when seated, the angle between the upper and lower parts of the leg should not drop below a 90 degree right angle. This makes the process of getting into or out of a chair one that requires less strength and effort from the legs, abdominal muscles and lower back.
Sturdy and structurally formed arm rests that are slightly higher than those found on regular "easy chairs" further add to the ease with which one can lower or lift oneself into or out of one of these high seat chairs.
The finishes, fabrics and general appearance of most high seated and high backed chairs are fairly
similar to those found on regular sitting room chairs. The one noticeable difference is that many (although not all) high seat chairs tend to have visible legs rather than an enclosed base.
The reason for this is the extra depth between the floor and the seat level of the chair. Enclosing this additional depth with fabric and padding would make the chair look disproportionally high whilst adding extra weight.
For this reason most high seat chairs make a feature out of having wooden legs and an open base. This makes them easier to move around and less heavy and bulky in appearance.
Beyond the high seat chair
The next step beyond a high seat chair is to have an electric riser and recliner chair.
With this type of chair the seat can rise, tilt and recline, thereby initiating the leaning forward motion that commences the activity of standing up and getting out of a seated position.
These chairs are naturally more expensive than high seated chairs but they are perfect for anyone who finds getting into or leaving a seated position awkward.
