Orthopedic chairs - Rise and recline chairs

A rise and recline chair is another term used to describe at lift and tilt chair, i.e. a chair that can be used to assist in the process of sitting down and standing up.

This kind of chair can be of a great aid to those with arthritis, problems joints, weakened muscles or the elderly.

Most rise and recline chairs have a dual action that enable the seat level to rise or fall and the chair's backrest and seat to tilt forward and angle back – all at the touch of a button.

When these actions are combined and controlled remotely with the aid of the chair's motion motors, they can be operated in such a way that they follow the body's normal sitting into, or getting out of a chair's, natural movements.

This means that, e.g. in the case of getting up from a seated position, the chair will rise to bring the body to a level where standing up is easier, whilst simultaneously tilting both the seat and backrest forwards to gently ease the seated person forwards and upwards into a standing position.

To sit down into a rise and recline chair the actions of the chair are simply reversed by using the chair's remote control.

This takes away much of the physical effort and stress required to sit down or stand up and in so doing it encourages general mobility because the difficult actions of lifting and lowering the body from a chair are no longer a problem.

Rise and recline chairs come in a range of styles, materials and colours and, when in their static seated position, look no different to a regular chair. They do however require connection to an electricity supply (via a regular plug) and the motors within these chairs make them heavier than a normal chair.
